The term 'chromium steel ball' refers to two
significantly different products in different industrial fields, mainly
in terms of chromium content, manufacturing process, and application
scenarios.
1. Chromium steel balls for bearings (high carbon chromium bearing steel
balls)
This is the most common meaning, referring to specialized steel balls
used to manufacture precision bearing rolling el
ements.
Its core material is high carbon chromium bearing steel, with a typical
grade of GCr15 (corresponding to American standard AISI 52100 and
Japanese standard SUJ2).
Chemical composition: Carbon content is about 0.95% -1.10%, chromium
content is about 1.30% -1.65%.
Performance characteristics: After heat treatment, the hardness is
extremely high (HRC 62-66), with excellent wear resistance, contact
fatigue strength, and dimensional stability.
Application areas: Widely used in various types of bearings in the
fields of automobiles, precision machine tools, home appliances,
aerospace, wind power generation, etc., it is a key component to ensure
high-precision and long-lasting operation of equipment.
2. Chromium steel balls (high chromium alloy cast iron grinding balls)
for ball mills
In the material grinding process of mining, cement, power and other
industries, "chromium steel ball" often refers to high chromium alloy
cast iron grinding ball, which is a wear-resistant grinding medium.
Chemical composition: The chromium content is much higher than that of
bearing steel balls, usually between 10% and 30%, and the carbon content
is also relatively high (2.0% -3.5%), and may contain elements such as
molybdenum and nickel.
Performance characteristics: extremely high hardness (HRC 58-65), high
compressive strength, excellent wear resistance, but relatively low
toughness compared to bearing steel balls. It is not made by forging or
cold drawing, but is produced using casting technology.
Application field: As a grinding medium in ball mills, used for crushing
materials such as ore, cement clinker, coal, etc. According to the
different chromium contents, it can be further divided into high
chromium balls (Cr ≥ 10%), medium chromium balls, and low chromium balls
(Cr 1% -3%).
